[00:00:07] Speaker 2: Hello guys, It is 5 O'clock and today I am going to talk about child marriage. Balika Vadhu is my favorite TV show and it's an Indian soap opera about the life of a child bride living in Rajasthan.

[00:00:29] Speaker 2: Balika Vadhu is a very long soap Opera shown for nearly 8 years [background noise] and consisted of more than 2000 episodes. It has also been as emerging one of the best TV shows across India. When I watch the very first episode, I was like Wow actors are amazing. This soap Opera has 2 seasons but we will mainly focus on the first one. In the first season which is named as, Child Marriage strong relationship of tender age. The main actions happen in Jaisalmer primarily. The Indian girl has been taken out of school to get married to a boy of her age "Jagdish" name of the character. [background noise]

[00:01:24] Speaker 2: Anyway, Anandi the character shows a very humble and intelligent girl only wanted to live with dolls and friends all day long. When she primarily got married then moved to her inlaws had a very good time to adjust with her new life, where she was not allowed to go to school anymore. Furthermore, she struggled with the role of not just being a friend but as a wife too. Before I continue to talk about the show I should mention that even in Balika Vadhu is it was clearly stated that by law child Marriage is an illegal practice in India, who was considered the child bride. UNICEF states that child marriage is a union formed before 18 years of age.


In India, provision of Child Marriage Act 2006. Humans are forced into 2007. A male who marries a child bride, he shall be punishable with imprisonment of two years, one Lakh Rupees or both. Anyway going back to the show. So the first five years of a child bride, were very challenging. As I mentioned, she had parents, new roles to adopt new family to live with, it looked like everybody loved and cared for her in law's house, except for "Surekha Sikri" otherwise known as "Daadisaa". Kalyani Devi was very affectionate towards her grandson Jagdish but not his wife Anandi and she never allowed her to come to school, play with dolls with her very few friends.


Daadisaa is portrayed as a very conservative woman and It was mostly concerned about her reputation and what other villagers will say or think about her. Balika Vadhu sends a message that India is a very much collectivist culture, where all the actions pretty much depend on what other people are listening to you. I also remembered TEDx talk I had watched the day before. It is called fighting forced marriages and honor-based abuse by Jasvinder Sanghera. And you can find that on YouTube. She shared her life story where she decided to against family wish to get married at the age of 14. She said, I was completely disowned by all the relatives except for my sister, who kept in touch with this Greeting.
